Why San Francisco?

San Francisco shares a rich history of human rights for all with the United Nations. The Charter of the United Nations, signed in San Francisco in 1945, was the first international agreement to proclaim gender equality as a fundamental human right.

In 1998, San Francisco became the first U.S. city to endorse the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW). Also known as the Women’s Bill of Rights, San Francisco brought city laws into compliance, mandated inclusion of women on city boards and commissions and ensured equal rights of women are considered in all decision making.
